Photoshop: Before and After Images

So what does it mean when an image is photoshopped? Well, this is usually the step where many edits are made and creativity takes over. Improvements might include:

  • Removing distracting background elements

  • Retouching skin and removing blemishes

  • Swapping heads

  • Changing or improving colours and contrast

  • Cropping and resizing

  • Adding or taking away elements

  • Changing colour to black and white

Why photoshop at all? Shooting in raw format means that the camera is capturing as much information as it can without making any creative decisions for you. This means that the raw file usually lacks colour and vibrancy. It is expected that the photographer will edit the image. Shooting in the jpeg format means the camera is making a lot of the decisions for you and doesn’t record as much information about the scene, so you have less to work with later on. How much you edit depends on your skill, creativity and the style of photography.
